Hormonal Health Self Assessment

Hormonal imbalance is the most common cause of the health concerns I see in naturopathic practice: Fatigue. Weight gain. Menopause. Infertility. Sexual dysfunction. Anxiety. Insomnia. Hypothyroidism. Adrenal fatigue. Fibroids. Acne. PMS. Crazy bad periods… You name it! Hormones, or more accurately a hormonal imbalance, almost always plays a key role.

Conventional medicine can sometimes fall short of correcting these problems in a way that is satisfactory to the affected woman. Rather than working with your body to correct dysfunction and restore balance, conventional medical interventions are often invasive, carry risks and only mask symptoms, overriding your body’s ability to heal itself under the right conditions. For example:

  • Teens taking the birth control pill for uncomplicated acne or painful periods without a conversation about the effect of diet and stress;
  • Supposedly infertile women seeking IVF before exploring less invasive options like herbal medicine and acupuncture;
  • Peri-menopausal women starting hormone replacement therapy before understanding the risks compared to a more natural approach.

Don’t get me wrong: when it’s a matter of life and death, drugs and surgery are key and my medical physician colleagues have my utmost respect. And sometimes, despite our best efforts, a naturopathic approach on its own is not enough and we need to integrate our approach with conventional treatments. However, far too often a naturopathic, holistic approach is ignored when it can truly make a world of a difference for women of all ages.

The good news is that naturopathic medicine totally excels at balancing hormones!

Naturopathic doctors (including hormone nerds like me) use conventional and specialized lab testing to understand your hormone levels and, more importantly, how your hormones are functioning in your body. A dysfunction in hormone production or metabolism can set of a cascade of symptoms, from weight gain to anxiety, hair loss and a dwindling sex drive, and may even increase your risk of certain types of cancer.

Thanks to high tech lab tests we can understand exactly what we’re dealing with and target treatment to bring your hormones back into balance, helping you feel like your awesome best self again, often without drugs, surgery or invasive treatments.
